PIBAR is short for Perhentian Island Bubbles' Artificial Reef; Also stand for those who are the pioneer of this intensive care unit for stress or half dead coral. They are: Peisee (Bubbles), Ilse (Amsterdam), Brian (Amsterdam), Alan (Singapore), and Ronnie (Bubbles).
The project started by collecting broken coral and pile them at the deeper water off the shore of Bubbles Dive Centre, to create more hiding place for little coral fish. And some of the PIBAR founder came across some highly stress coral due to low tide and exposure to direct sun light, they decided to move a few of them to the pile and see what happened. Only within days the colour on the coral returned, the paleness of the reef subside, showing the sign of recovery. An anemone was found rolling loosely by the shore due to a strong storm a night before, and was placed on PIBAR. Latest report shows that there were baby anemonefish living on it now! The species still unknown because the babies are really tiny!
This is how the reef look like on the second day. Note the anemone is already attached fully on the reef.
To date they are 3 reefs being constructed by Bubbles' divers and volunteers, with monthly observation by the volunteers, the reef shows form of rejuvenation of the stressed reef, and also new coral growing on the new reef.
Bubbles is celebrating International Year of Reef 2008 everyday. Come speak to our dive crew about PIBAR, and coral conservation. More detail on IYOR please click
